Event Description:

The business of healthcare is big, complex, and multi-dimensional. This overview will provide new and experienced fraud investigators, auditors, and analysts with a foundational knowledge of the healthcare ecosystem, the regulatory and investigative landscape, and key terms and definitions needed during engagements. We will explore the continuum of improper medical billing practices, the definition of fraud, waste, and abuse in healthcare, and identify the five most common types of healthcare fraud. The presentation will include case studies and practical scenarios to support the application to the participant.

  • Identify and recall the definitions of fraud, waste, and abuse in the healthcare system.

  • Demonstrate the ability to recognize common improper billing practices and fraud schemes in healthcare.
  • Integrate knowledge of healthcare fraud indicators to create a comprehensive fraud prevention and detection plan.
  • Analyze case studies and scenarios to determine the level of intent and categorize the type of healthcare fraud scheme present.

Speaker Biography


Colin May, CFE has over 20 years of federal law enforcement and compliance experience. He has served as a Special Agent with two agencies, a Bankruptcy Auditor, and an Assistant Director in the Office of Investigation for a large Federal Inspector General’s office. Colin has multiple graduate degrees in forensic accounting, leadership, and strategic communications and holds his Bachelor's degree from Siena College. He has been published in the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, Fraud Magazine, Fraud Insights, and other publications; Colin has presented at numerous national and local ACFE chapter conferences. A Certified Fraud Examiner since 2006, he also holds a faculty appointment as Professor of Forensic Studies and Criminal Justice at Stevenson University.  He is also a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and is on the Indiana chapter of the ACHE's Career Development Committee. https://www.linkedin.com/in/colinmaycfe/
