Event Description

This presentation will include recent updates in regulation and approaches to reducing fraud, waste, and abuse in federal grants. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the various forms of fraud, their consequences, and measures to prevent grant fraud through collaborative efforts and proactive prevention and detection techniques like risk assessments and data analytics. It will highlight stakeholders' roles and responsibilities in mitigating fraud and provide practical steps for strengthening grant oversight, supported by insights from real-world cases.

Speaker Bio

Nick Macedonia is a Special Agent with the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Inspector General in Washington, D.C. He has worked in the Federal anti-fraud community in various roles for more than 15 years and became a criminal investigator in August 2015. Nick has extensive experience in both supporting and leading Federal criminal, civil, and administrative investigations and proactive reviews, the results of which have included criminal prosecution, civil settlement, suspension and debarment, and the administrative recovery of government funds. Nick has also been an agency-level firearms and defensive tactics instructor and has taught fraud-related topics for entities including the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, the Federal Inspector General Criminal Investigator Academy, and the Association of Inspectors General. Nick is currently on a detail to the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee, established in March 2020 by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act to provide oversight of the $5 trillion in pandemic relief dollars.

Nick earned bachelor’s degrees in biology and Spanish and a Minor in Astronomy from the University of Virginia (UVA). Following graduation, he took additional business and accounting classes at the Northern Virginia Community College and earned a Certificate in Accounting from UVA. He is a Certified Fraud Examiner and a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist. In his spare time, Nick enjoys competitive swimming and spending time with his wife and five children.

Substitution/Cancellation Policy:

Registration fees will not be refunded for cancellations made after March 7, 2025. No-shows will be individually responsible for full payment.
